				      <title>Monday, September 06th, 2010 - Bridge Players</title>
				      <link>http://berkeleyhistorichotel.com/events-ncal/index.php&#63;com=detail&amp;eID=5946</link>
<description>The Bridge Players group is open to all members, though many regular players are non&#8212;members. There is no obligation to commit to regular attendance, as tables change weekly to accommodate available players.

Typically, four or five tables play a very social form of party bridge. We play a total of 16 hands, divided into 4 hands with 4 different partnerships. For the first round of 4 hands, players sit with partners of their choosing. From that point on, movement between tables and partners depends on scores for the round and luck of the draw. Each player contributes 50 cents to play, and at the end of the afternoon, the kitty is divided between the winners and a donation to the City Club.

All are welcome and our players span a wide range of playing levels. This is not tournament or duplicate bridge and we enjoy the play of the hand as our foremost goal, not winning master points. Many of our players meet before play for a deli lunch at noon to enjoy a richer social experience.

Anyone interested in coming to bridge must phone us first to ensure a seat. We arrange our tables to &#39;come out even,” and no one should ever just show up unless only intend to observe. When tables are uneven, we always give preference to members and draw from a waiting list of non&#8212;members who occasionally play. So, even if you can&#39;t join us on a regular basis, we would love to have you play when you can by calling and making a date for a particular Monday only. Once we have your name, we might call you just to see if you are available to complete a table.

				      <link>http://berkeleyhistorichotel.com/events-ncal/index.php&#63;com=detail&amp;eID=5878</link>
<description>Lions Clubs International is a network of 1.3 million men and women in 202 countries and geographic areas who work together to answer the needs that challenge communities around the world. Founded in 1917, the Lions are dedicated to the idea that business and professional people should expand their horizons from purely commercial concerns to the betterment of their communities and the world at large.

The Berkeley Lions are the fourth&#8212;oldest Club west of the Mississippi, having been chartered in 1919. Our members are business and professional men and women much like you. We represent a range of ages from the 30s to the 80s and come from a variety of occupations and types of business. Many of us own and run small businesses, but others work in major corporations, universities and the public sector. All of us are united by a desire to better our communities and to help those who have fewer advantages than we have or disabilities and to model the value of unselfish service to youth, such as youth sports, clubs and scouting, both by assisting them and by involving them in our activities.

The Berkeley Lions sponsor the Berkeley Women’s Daytime Drop&#8212;In Center, which provides a safe and supportive daytime refuge for homeless women and children. We also support the Oakland Blind Center and participate in projects with Rebuilding Together, which helps preserve affordable housing by bringing volunteers and communities together to rehabilitate the homes of low&#8212;income homeowners. We also deliver food baskets, with the Berkeley Fire Department, to the needy and elderly during the winter holidays, and we provide funds and other assistance for worthy groups on a per&#8212;case basis.

The best way to learn more about membership/become a member is to come!

				      <title>Friday, September 10th, 2010 - The Berkeley Breakfast Club</title>
				      <link>http://berkeleyhistorichotel.com/events-ncal/index.php&#63;com=detail&amp;eID=5757</link>
				      <description>The Berkeley Breakfast Club was founded on May 8, 1936 at the Durant Hotel. The object of the club, as set forth in its Constitution, is &#39;to foster, promote, exploit and publicize the educational, cultural, civic, commercial, industrial, recreational and residential assets of the city of Berkeley. It also shall be the purpose of the club to foster a closer relationship with the members of the University of California family, and with the commuters whose business takes them away from the Berkeley area a great deal of the time.&#39;

Several changes have taken place over the years. The club has continued to develop its uniqueness by providing fun and the unexpected for its members. Membership is set at no more than 200 active members, all of whom are either residents or engaged in business in the Berkeley area. The club convenes each Friday morning at the Berkeley City Club from 7:00am to 8:30am. Attendance is a personal habit, very rewarding to those who make the effort. Each year, we are fortunate to have new people who join our long&#8212;standing members in continuing the traditions and spirit of the Berkeley Breakfast Club.

Admits:
Open to the public, but by invitation only

				      <link>http://berkeleyhistorichotel.com/events-ncal/index.php&#63;com=detail&amp;eID=5989</link>
<description>In 1910, a group of concerned Berkeley citizens formed The City Club. Their goal was to help the city of Berkeley address some of its current issues. In 1922, another group of citizens founded The Public Spirit Club. Three years later, the two clubs merged and adopted the current name, City Commons Club.

Every Friday, the City Commons Club meets to promote lively discussion of topics of concern to San Francisco Bay area residents. Members gather in the second floor bar at approximately 11:20 for a pre&#8212;lunch cocktail and greeting. The buffet luncheon is served on the main floor from 11:45 to 12:15. A guest speaker is introduced at 12:30, and speaks for 30 to 40 minutes. A session of questions from members and guests follows.

Topics span a wide range of subjects including science, social science, politics, economics, world affairs, medicine and health care, local natural history and conservation among other things.

Guests must make lunch reservations so the Club can plan appropriately. Please phone (510) 527&#8212;2173 by 4 p.m. on the Thursday preceeding the meeting to make a reservation.
